Signs of Worn Seals

Wiper seals are critical components in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, playing a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation and longevity of machinery. Typically made from elastomeric materials, wiper seals are designed to prevent contaminants from entering a system while allowing for the smooth movement of a piston or rod. Understanding the significance of these seals and their applications can help industries enhance the performance of their equipment.

In various industrial sectors, the efficiency and longevity of machinery are paramount. One crucial component that significantly impacts these factors is the shaft seal, particularly under high-temperature conditions. High temperature shaft seals are specifically designed to withstand extreme temperatures while preventing the leakage of fluids and contaminants, thus enhancing the performance and reliability of equipment.

Oil seals, also known as rotary shaft seals or lip seals, serve the primary function of sealing the rotating shafts in mechanical systems. They are typically made from elastomers, metals, or a combination of both, offering good resistance to various fluids, including oils, greases, and water. The 50x90x10 oil seal, with its dimensions indicating a 50mm inner diameter, 90mm outer diameter, and a width of 10mm, is designed to fit specific shaft sizes while providing optimal sealing performance.

Although cosmetics are not meant for consumption, there are concerns that titanium dioxide in lipstick and toothpaste may be swallowed or absorbed through the skin.

In a review published in 2022 in the journal Archives of Toxicology, researchers found that the ingestion of E171 is a “a definite health risk for consumers and their progeny.” After reviewing dozens of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro studies on the toxicity of E171, the researchers wrote that two facts must be noted: “First, reprotoxicity studies show that animals of both sexes are impacted by the toxicity of these nanoparticles, underlining the importance of conducting in vivo studies using both male and female animals. Second, human exposure begins in utero via maternal-fetal transfer and continues after birth by breastfeeding. Children are then chronically re-exposed due to their food preferences. To be relevant to the human in vivo situation, experimental studies should therefore consider nanoparticle exposure with respect to the age or life period of the studied population.”

Titanium dioxide, or TiO2, will be listed on product labels, but companies are not required to list ingredient size or structure. When it is used in sunscreens to block UV light, titanium dioxide is considered an active ingredient, which means the concentration must also be listed.
